The TTR Smarter Choices team members have an excellent combination of skills and experience to help your organisation save money, satisfy planning conditions, reduce your carbon footprint and enhance your Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) credentials.
Retail
- Working for B&Q, TTR has developed over 80 retail-based Travel Plans to meet planning requirements and to support the environmental agenda of retailers.
- TTR has provided ongoing support to retailers with the implementation of their Travel Plans, working to ensure Travel Plan targets are gradually met over a 5 year period.
- TTR has also provided ongoing Travel Plan monitoring support to retailers .
- TTR has developed and helped to implement some of the first DSPs for London premises, for Croydon and Bromley Councils in south London .
- TTR oversees the European-funded TRAILBLAZER project, which is promoting the development of DSPs across Europe .
- TTR investigated freight deliveries to a major retailer convenience store. The project investigated the impact of deliveries on safe pedestrian movements.
- TTR is running the ECOStars fleet recognition scheme on behalf of the South Yorkshire Local Transport Plan Partnership. A number of major retailers have signed up to the scheme.
- TTR has been involved in a number of projects, aimed at facilitating Out of Hours deliveries to retailers restricted by planning, environmental health or local agreements.
Education
- Blackpool and Fylde College - TTR developed a Travel Plan for staff and learners spread over 4 sites. The specific aim was to reduce the environmental impact of the college by enabling staff and learners to travel in more sustainable ways.
- Castle College , Nottingham - TTR developed a Travel Plan for the 1,200 staff across 5 sites. TTR also assisted the college in their links with 8 local schools, under the umbrella group of the 'Broxtowe Area Transport Strategy' group.
- Derby College , Derby - TTR provided Travel Plan advice to Derby College which involved conducting a travel survey of 1,000 staff and 30,000 learners across 4 sites to establish the likely impact on travel behaviour of the relocation to a new site.
- Post 16 Education, Torbay - TTR carried out a study into the factors affecting young people's decisions to enter education after the age of 16 in Torbay . A range of market research and other techniques ( GIS and accessibility analysis using bus timetable information) were used during the study.
- University of Southampton Travel Survey - Working on behalf of Gifford Ltd, TTR was commissioned to administer a web based staff and student survey and a visitor survey.
- University of Lincoln - TTR helped to develop a Travel Plan for a site with 5000 students and 600 members of staff. TTR provided help with group meetings, facilitation of workshops and the development of strategies and implementation initiatives.
- University of Derby - TTR conducted a survey and analysis to investigate how staff and students travelled to the university and to obtain opinions on the facilities provided.
- University of Nottingham - The TTR team developed a Green Transport Plan for the University of Nottingham.
Faith
- Faith Travel Plans Guide - TTR was commissioned by WestTrans to prepare a guide to faith Travel Planning. The guide can be used by developers, Travel Plan Coordinators and local authority officers seeking to implement and appraise Travel Plans at faith destinations. Download the guide here.
TTR has also prepared voluntary and planning-related Travel Plans for a number of faith sites. This involves identifying practical Travel Plan measures that are cost-effective, easy to set up and can be completed and introduced within short timescales and with limited resources. Below is a selection of some of our clients.
- East London Mosque - TTR developed a Travel Plan for this mosque which attracts 4,000 worshippers on a Friday as part of a planning application for an extension to the mosque.
- BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir (Neasden Temple) - TTR worked with the Working Group to develop a voluntary Travel Plan for this site, which is the largest mandir outside India with around 1,000 visitors a day and around 45,000 visitors at Diwali.
- Beulah Apostolic Church - TTR prepared an iTRACE Travel Plan which was submitted with a planning application for the construction of a new church building to accommodate the congregation of 200. Feedback from the sub regional Travel Plan coordinator was that 'this is a very thorough Travel Plan'.
- Hounslow Jamia Masjid and Islamic Centre (Hounslow Mosque) - TTR developed a voluntary Travel Plan for the mosque which including measures to increase cycling, walking and car sharing.
- St Mary's Parish Church , Hampton - The travel survey questionnaires were completed as part of a Sunday service which resulted in a 100% response rate. TTR then worked closely with the Vicar and Travel Plan Coordinator to develop a voluntary Travel Plan for this church which has a congregation of 250.
Health
TTR provides expertise in identifying practical measures for NHS Trusts and hospitals that are cost-effective, easy to set up and can be completed and introduced within short timescales and with limited resources. Below is a selection of our clients.
- Weston General Hospital - Working for Weston Area Health Trust, TTR developed a Travel Plan for the hospital which involved conducting baseline staff and patient / service user travel surveys and a car parking audit.
- North Somerset PCT - TTR developed a site specific Travel Plan as part of a Section 106 agreement and planning consent for the development of a new Primary Care Resource Centre at Portishead.
- Nottinghamshire PCTs - TTR worked with a group of PCTs in Nottinghamshire to develop site specific Travel Plans. Three years after the introduction of the Travel Plans, TTR was asked to conduct the monitoring travel surveys and to revise the documents. TTR also helped the group of PCTs to bid for grant support.
- Rushcliffe and Gedling PCTs - TTR was commissioned by the PCTs to develop a Travel Information poster and leaflet for use by staff and visitors at a number of health centres in the two PCT areas.
- Nottingham City PCT - TTR organised and ran a Travel Plan Advice surgery for the PCT. PCT staff were provided with personalised journey planning advice to influence and change staff travel behaviour.
- Derby City General Hospital - The hospital was embarking on a large PFI development. TTR produced an outline Travel Plan to incorporate the specific issues relating to the PFI development and relocation of staff onto the one site.
Research & Evaluation
- TravelWise Merseyside campaign support - For a number of years TTR has been providing market research and testing support to ensure that the TravelWise Merseyside campaign is effectively positioned, targeted, monitored and delivered. TTR has also tracked the overall effectiveness of TravelWise campaigns over 2008-11 by assessing brand recognition, travel behaviour and attitudes to climate change.
- TravelWise Merseyside Personalised Travel Planning (PTP) evaluation - We have also conducted travel behaviour surveys to assess the impact of Personalised Travel Planning (PTP) interventions in a number of residential areas in Liverpool and the Wirral.
- Various Local Authorities - We have also led extensive household travel surveys for various local authorities. These provided a snapshot of travel patterns, and assessed the awareness and attitudes of the general public towards transport schemes and polices.
- Nottingham Big Wheel - the Greater Nottingham Transport partnership developed and ran an awareness raising programme called the Big Wheel. TTR was commissioned to conduct baseline evaluation and subsequent tracking of this successful campaign in Nottingham . We were able to demonstrate the influence of different campaigns on different target audiences.
- Northamptonshire County Council - TTR delivered annual county-wide personal travel behaviour surveys for over 2000 residents in Northamptonshire. The survey results helped to refine the Second Local Transport Plan during its development and then monitor progress in meeting its objectives.
Travel Awareness and Travel Behaviour
- TAPESTRY - TTR led the EC-funded travel awareness project, TAPESTRY (Travel Awareness Publicity and Education Supporting a Sustainable Transport Strategy in Europe ). The project provided recommendations covering the full life cycle and support framework necessary for a successful campaign.
- Making Campaigning for Smarter Choices Work: Guidelines for Local Authorities - Working on behalf of the DfT, TTR then tailored the TAPESTRY guidelines for application in the UK (see here for more information).
- Travel Awareness Workshops - Working on behalf of the DfT, TTR ran a series of five regional workshops for local authority representatives to promote the Guidelines 'Making Campaigning for Smarter Choices Work'.
