Achieving equality of opportunity for disabled people requires a multi disciplined approach. Understanding the barriers to social inclusion faced by disabled people as a result of inaccessible transport facilities, and the promotion of wider opportunities for social integration are important.
Making the travelling environment more accessible for everyone is an essential component of any strategy that aims to achieve equality of opportunity. There has been increasing recognition in recent years of the needs of disabled people, including people with sensory disabilities, people with learning disabilities and people with mental health needs. The right to equality of access for disabled people is defined by law (Disability Discrimination Act 2005) and public bodies now have a duty to proactively implement and monitor accessibility.
TTR consultants have been in the vanguard of policy research, much of which has led to important guidelines and standards for accessibility, since the 1980s.
